The COVID-19 vaccine is a hypothetical vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID.19).  Although no such vaccine has completed clinical trials, several efforts have been made in progress to develop such vaccines. 

In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the vaccine against the virus that produces this severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) cannot be expected to be available in less than 18 months.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, which is organizing a $ 2 billion fund worldwide for the rapid development of vaccine candidates in April.  It indicated that its vaccine could be available for emergency use in less than 12 months or as early as 2021. 

On May 4, 2020, the WHO organized a telethon (televised fundraising event) to prevent COVID infections  -19 and raise US $ 8 billion from forty countries to support rapid vaccine development. 

He also announced the deployment of an international "Solidarity Trial" called a Phase II-III clinical trial for the simultaneous evaluation of multiple candidate vaccines. As of May, 159 vaccine candidates were in development, including five Phase I - II safety and efficacy studies in humans and seven candidates in Phase I trials.

On December 8, 2020, a 90-year-old Northern Irish woman named Margaret Keenan became the first woman to be vaccinated outside of the trial, vaccinated at Coventry University Hospital.
